Much has been said about conferences and their importance, especially in the virtual world that we live in today. Online social networks have drawn us into a new, unfamiliar social milieu which we are only beginning to explore. It is a concept that enables connections, of a different kind than those we have known until now. Often these kinds of connections seem to lack something.
The significance of organizing of a conference is in creating a gathering of real people into a physical place at a specific time. This may seem trivial, but I have come to understand that these physical encounters between people return us to a type of relationship that is unmediated, familiar, and positive.
Those relationships in which we look one another in the eye, shake hands, smile, discuss, share information and raise questions. Nowadays a meeting, a gathering, a conference becomes even more exciting, bridging and connecting us more than ever before, because the effect of physically meeting the faces behind social networking profiles becomes something that is particularly meaningful.
Today I truly believe that there is no proper virtual substitute for meeting people in person, perhaps to spark the discovery of the next breakthrough application …
In the meantime we are here, creating encounters between people. 🙂
